Lifetime achievement award for Shelley Bacon
Shelley Bacon, head of Northern Cables, is the latest recipient of the Brockville and District Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Business Achievement Award.
The area’s largest business group made the announcement on Friday. Bacon joins previous recipients George Tackaberry, Larry VanderBaaren, Joe Hudson, Paul Fournier, Hunter Grant, Gord Brown, David Beatty, Bob Runciman, Al Smith, Dave Sheridan, Don Green, Sherri Simzer, John and Steve Mazurek, and Dave Jones.
The annual award is sponsored by the 1000 Islands Community Development Corporation. Recipients are chosen by an independent committee of judges based on criteria such as community involvement, mentorship, economic impact, job creation, volunteerism, longevity, and personal/corporate generosity.
Shelley Bacon and a small group of former Phillips Cables staff founded Northern Cables in Brockville in 1996.
“Under Shelley’s visionary leadership, the company has grown from its humble beginnings to become a major player in the industry,” chamber officials added.
Now in its 29th year, Northern Cables employs 300 staff and specializes in the manufacture of copper and aluminum industrial and commercial power cables for both the Canadian and U.S. markets.
Bacon is also an active member of Professional Engineers Ontario. He dedicates his time and expertise to various volunteer roles, including his current role as chairman of the St. Lawrence Corridor Economic Development Commission, and serving as a director of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Addictions and Mental Health, and the Rideau-St. Lawrence Science Fair committee, as well as volunteering on the fundraising committee for Maple View Landings in Athens.
Bacon’s previous honours include an honorary diploma in 2020 from St. Lawrence College and the chamber’s Business Person of the Year award in 2021.
Bacon also sits on the board of director of another local manufacturer, Canarm.
He lives near Smiths Falls and is the father of three grown children all working in the industry. His eldest daughter works with him at Northern Cables.
“Shelley Bacon has always exemplified kindness, generosity, and humility. It is a true privilege to honor him in this manner,” said Trish McNamara, executive director of the 1000 Islands Community Development Corporation.
“When asked why he goes above and beyond, Shelley simply says it is because he can and because it benefits our entire community.”
“He’s really just a down-to-Earth individual who wants to make a difference in the community,” added Pam Robertson, the chamber’s executive director.
Bacon will be celebrated during a special ceremony following the chamber’s annual general meeting at the Brockville Country Club on Thursday, March 27.
Before then, the chamber will announce the recipient of its Lifetime Volunteer Achievement Award in the coming weeks.
